2020 -21 Guest Editor: Jennifer Perrine
In 2017, we began inviting former contributors to serve as guest editors at Broadsided Press. We wanted to introduce new voices and visions to our editorial process. The energy and insight each have brought have greatly enriched the conversations we’ve built.
Please join us in welcoming our 2020-21 guest editor, Jennifer Perrine! Jennifer will join the team in reading submissions and selecting works for publication as well as partaking in editorial discussions about the direction and future of Broadsided. We are eager and grateful to see what their vision brings.
We first met Jennifer when they submitted a poem to our annual Switcheroo, a feature in which writers respond to visual art. “Ex Ovo Omnia” was published in April, 2010. Two other of Jennifer’s responses to Broadsided prompts have been published: their ekphrastic poem “Now is Not the Time to Talk About Gun Control” was part of our 2018 “Broadsided Responds” folio of work engaging with guns in American culture and “Sickness,” which was written as a “Beautiful Outlaw,” became one of the broadsides featured in our folio of work responding to “A Sense of Home” during the Covid-19 pandemic.
It is a mark of our editorial admiration for Jennifer’s work that we have published them three times. At Broadsided, because we publish slowly (usually only 12 – 14 pieces a year), we only very rarely publish a writer’s work more than once. But time and again, Jennifer’s work has sung through. We are thrilled to bring their vision to our editorial team for the coming year.
Jennifer Perrine is the award-winning author of four poetry books: Again, The Body Is No Machine, In the Human Zoo, and No Confession, No Mass. Jennifer lives in Portland, Oregon, where they co-host the Incite Queer Writers reading series and host The Occasion, a monthly poetry show on KBOO FM. When not writing, Jennifer leads workshops on creative writing, social justice, and intersectional equity. Read more at www.jenniferperrine.org.
