Issue 21.1, Spring 2025

Posted on |

Happy Poetry Month!

We are overjoyed to offer nine new broadsides–eight new original collaborations between writers and artists plus the Switcheroo–for you to enjoy, print, and share in your communities. Get all in one easy-to-print PDF.

Together, the words and images of each broadside combine to a unique expression, a dance of meaning and significance between artists and mediums. Let your eye and ear find echoes between these beautiful collaborations.

In the folio as a whole, borrowing from insights shared by the collaborators, we see things “lost, missing, or lurking in the shadows.” A “notion of moving through spaces or ideas, of what remains and what continues.” Also “a lot of care and nuance in the way the spaces in these poems are weighty, present, tangible, honored, mourned, devastating, too much, not enough, there, not-there.”  A “kind of push and pull and sense of endurance.”

Don’t miss the “Collaborators’ Q&A” for each broadside, in which artist and writer share responses to each other’s work and the process of bringing them together,  books and art that have recently inspired them, responses to the folio as a whole, creative prompts, and more.

We hope this folio brings you surprise, emotion, connection, curiosity, and solace. We hope you are doing the work you love in the world, and we hope you feel close to all you care about.

Issue 21.1, Spring 2025

Thanks to a request by a reader, we’ve decided to offer all broadsides from the 21.1 folio in one single PDF for ease of printing. We do hope you’ll return to the website for the interviews, prompts, insights, and recommendations by each writer and artist in response to their publication.

BROADSIDED’s ANNUAL SWITCHEROO
Ekphrastic Responses to artist Regin Igloria’s digital collage, Morning Meditation, selected by 2024 Switcheroo artist Sara Tabbert

For the month of April, we posted art by Regin Igloria, Morning Meditation, and asked writers to respond. Regin’s piece as Sara Tabbert writes, “presents plenty of questions for a writer to consider—integration of being and landscape, crouch, tangle, a sense of an inadequate attempt to hide, the passer-by encountering a flash of an unreal or mythic being along a very ordinary, grey, rural roadway.”

We received a variety of responses that drew inspiration from the largely grayscale palette and the concept of a road–its monotony, repeating signs, and endless asphalt marked only by guardrails and lanes. Tate Lewis-Carroll’s “Recept Poem #65” stood out immediately for how its structure emulated a collage, with strange turns of phrase and patchwork lines that jump from one idea to the next.

Teaching Inspiration:
lesson plans by teachers, for teachers

“Synesthetic Writing” by Sarah Brockhaus

Take any three broadsides (we suggest “Ghost Log,” “Los Macheteros,” and “At Cape Perpetua”) and work with students to break down the usual barriers between visual technique and poetic technique in an exciting act of live translation!
