6/5/24: 2024 Switcheroo Collaboration

Thank you to ALL who submitted to The Switcheroo—we are excited to unveil the collaboration that resulted from writers responding to Sara Tabbert’s “New Growth.” Our congratulations to Raquel Gordon, whose poem “Topology” engaged with and expanded Sara’s art.  You can see the broadside and read their insightful thoughts about artmaking, ekphrasis and more here. Congratulations, too, to our finalists, David Capps and Lisa Allen Ortiz.

WANTED: Ekphrastic Responses to artist Sara Tabbert’s carved veneer panel, New Growth
DEADLINE: May 1, 2024

SUBMITTABLE LINK (use “Switcheroo” tab)

Wood cut of a tree with abstract images by Sara Tabbert.
“New Growth,” Sara Tabbert, 2022. Wood, veneer, acrylic on carved panel, 10″x10.”

Broadsided seeks submissions of poetry and short prose that respond to this art.

The winning entry will be published on June 1, 2024, as a Broadsided collaboration to enliven the doors, utility poles, bus stops, and walls of the world. Submission guidelines and details follow.

What is The Switcheroo?  Every spring, we like to invite writers to respond to art we select for publication (most of our broadsides originate with artists responding to writing). This is the 21st Broadsided “Switcheroo.”

This sculpture was chosen by artist Douglas Culhane; of his decision, Douglas had this to say:

I was attracted to the vibrant color and dynamic composition of Sara Tabbert’s image “New Growth.” Its shifts in scale, and combination of geometric and organic shapes present a compelling opportunity for a poet’s response. The image is subtly  representational, inviting a text that explores a range of perspectives. “New Growth” has a bold graphic quality that will command attention even in the vernacular, sometimes noisy, environments in which Braodsides often appear. I am looking forward to seeing the new life that “New Growth” will take on in combination with text. —Douglas Culhane

Poems should be UNDER 20 lines.  Prose should be UNDER 300 words.

Entries should be sent via Submittable under the “Switcheroo” tab (please make sure you enter via that tab, not the “poems” or “prose” portals). Further guidelines can be found on Submittable.

Curious to know what we’re looking for? See past Switcheroo publications.

We’ve favored responses that are not literal interpretations but instead amplify some emotional aspect of the visual art. As both image and text will appear together in the final publication, we seek writing in conversation with the art such that a new piece is created by the two together.

PS: We are are also open for non-Switcheroo submissions. See our guidelines. If selected, a Broadsided artist will respond to your work. See what you inspire!
